Snakes and Ladders

Snakes and Ladders unfolds as a process-based exhibition of abstract painting in which the visual elements of Lizzie Zelter’s wanderings intertwine unplaceable vertical and horizontal zones, like a game marked by shortcuts, mishaps, and chance encounters. Through layered color, rhythm, and brushwork, the works reveal worlds that exist within the cracks of the everyday: between the seams of the pavement, inside glass enclosures of shelving and displays, or in that ambiguous point where it is impossible to tell where a mirror begins or ends as it merges with the detail of someone’s clothing.

Zelter transforms fragments of the built environment, home furnishings, and office supplies into spatial thresholds. Inverted scales, floating surfaces, and silvery reflections climbing upside down activate an unstable perception, where the domestic and the urban are disguised and folded back onto themselves. Like a game of Snakes and Ladders, the pictorial journey advances and retreats, proposing an experience of drift. It is an invitation to look again at what usually goes unnoticed, and to find in the very process of painting new ways of inhabiting space through intuition and fissure.
